Samsung to launch Galaxy S7 ahead of MWC 2016; teases Gear VR headset

Samsung has confirmed that the highly anticipated flagship devices are slated to launch at its Unpacked event on 21 February in Barcelona, Spain. The event will take place just ahead of the Mobile World Congress that will be held from Feb 22 to 25, 2016.

The company has also released a teaser video that shows a man using a Gear VR headset giving a glimpse of an unpacked box. This could also mean the company plans on adding some VR features or has decided a VR launch for those not present at the event, just like OnePlus did in the past.

The company is expected to launch two models – Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge. However, one can also expect a third model – a larger curvy variant dubbed Galaxy S7 edge+. Seems like all three smartphones may come with the same hardware, with the only differentiator being the display size and form factor. The standard S7 is expected to pack in a flat display, while the S7 edge and the edge+ are expected to pack in a dual-edged curved display. According to the rumours so far, all the three variants are expected to sport a Quad HD resolution.

As for the internals of the Samsung Galaxy S7 and its siblings, they are expected to utilise chipsets coming from both Samsung and Qualcomm. The Samsung chipset in question is the Exynos 8890, while the Qualcomm variants would pack in the Snapdragon 820 chipset. It was recently revealed that Samsung itself will be building the chipsets for Qualcomm.

These devices are very crucial for Samsung as the company struggles for a firm foothold over markets.

Flipkart announces ‘Big Exchange Days’ for smartphones, TVs and more

To give a further push to sales in the competing e-commerce space, Flipkart has announced the launch of ‘Big Exchange Days’. It is a new monthly exchange programme for the smartphone, tablets, laptops, televisions, refrigerators and washing machines category.

Flipkart plans to schedule the exchange program on the 1st and 2nd of every month. The ‘Big Exchange Days’ gives users the chance for an easy doorstep exchange. Flipkart claims that every delivery executive has been trained to understand the process and exchange quality check methods.
Ankit Nagori – Chief Business Officer, Flipkart, said, “The average cycle in India for replacing a phone is 18-24 months and we are witnessing similar trends in the television category. Customers are continuously looking to upgrade to the next new-age model, but disposing off the previously owned models has always been a concern. The Flipkart Exchange Programme offers customers a holistic solution to the whole process of looking for buyers of their old products and buy new products.”

Those looking to exchange smartphones will need to provide the IMEI number and the delivery executive will check the screen and overall condition of the product at the hand-to-hand exchange point. However, for televisions, the delivery executive will have to mount it and check the working conditions of the appliance. For other devices such as laptop, washing machine and so on, the delivery person will switch on the product to check its working conditions.

“With ‘Big Exchange Days’, we will help customers upgrade to their latest favourites in a quick and convenient way. We foresee this programme to be a big hit amongst our customers and expect it to drive 20% of the sales in these categories by the end of this year.” Nagori added.

Among White House hopefuls, Trump least likely to hit “follow” button on Twitter

twitter_cover-624x351

The millions of Twitter users following Donald Trump shouldn’t expect a “follow back” from the Republican presidential front-runner anytime soon.

Trump’s campaign account @realDonaldTrump has nearly 6 million Twitter followers, the most of any candidate running for president. But he is picky about who he follows, with just 49 accounts listed as of Friday. That means he has the highest ratio of followers to those he is following, in both the Republican and Democratic fields.

In contrast, Ted Cruz, the U.S. senator from Texas who has emerged as Trump’s strongest rival, follows nearly 14,000 accounts on Twitter and has 755,000 followers, according to his profile as of Friday.

The exclusivity underscores how Trump primarily uses Twitter to broadcast his message as opposed to engaging in a back and forth with users, experts in digital strategy said. While other campaigns use a similar approach, Trump commands the most attention on social media.

Trump’s pickiness may indicate a surprising strategy for the freewheeling Republican front-runner: Playing it safe when it comes to pledging his Twitter allegiance with a “follow.”

Candidates can’t pick and choose their followers, but they have control over when to click the follow button.

“There is more risk in who you follow,” said Scott Talan, a communications professor at American University who teaches social media strategy. “If you’re actively following someone, you’re assuming it’s not going to be some religious extremist … or a prisoner with a record.”

And, while some Republican candidates follow each other, Trump follows none of them.

The accounts Trump monitors include those of his children and several hotel properties. Also on the eclectic list are musician Steven Tyler, basketball great Magic Johnson, Vince McMahon, chairman and CEO of WWE Inc, and sisters Lynette “Diamond” Hardaway and Rochelle “Silk” Richardson, former Democrats who now stump for Trump and tweet under the handle @DiamondandSilk.

Despite Trump’s highly public battle with Fox News over anchor Megyn Kelly’s role as a moderator in last week’s Republican debate, Fox shows or news personalities such as Sean Hannity account for better than 10 percent of the handles he follows. Kelly, not surprisingly, did not make the list, but the Fox handles still add up to a larger bloc than any outside of Trump’s family or business.

Hannity and other Fox presenters are also widely followed by Trump’s rivals for the GOP presidential nomination.

Trump’s cautious approach to who he follows hasn’t put a damper on his social activity. His account shows more than 30,000 tweets, the highest of any account reviewed by Reuters.

It also hasn’t stopped Trump from committing blunders with his retweets, like the one from an account called @WhiteGenocideTM, which gave its location as “Jewmerica” and featured an image that referenced George Lincoln Rockwell, a prominent figure in the neo-Nazi movement in the United States.

“A LOOSE CANNON”

Hope Hicks, a spokeswoman for the Trump campaign, said that Trump operates his own Twitter account. “Everything you see on there is pretty much directly from him,” she said. “The strategy behind it is to tell the truth and to call it like he sees it.”

On Twitter, Trump goes where his opponents fear to tread. He uses it to launch unfiltered personal attacks on those who cross paths with him. For example, he did not shy from retweeting a post that included photographs of a skimpily dressed Kelly from a magazine shoot and the comment, “And this is the bimbo that’s asking presidential questions?”

“He is definitely a loose cannon in terms of how he uses his Twitter account,” said Micah Sifry, co-founder of Personal Democracy Media, an online forum on technology and politics. “At the same time, he hasn’t been hurt by it yet because apparently a big chunk of what he’s saying is popular among Republican voters.”

Trump is aware of his social media success. Following the seventh Republican presidential debate on Thursday, he tweeted Twitter data showing that he commanded the most traffic during the event.

“Great Twitter poll-and I wasn’t even there,” he said.

Twitter matters to campaigns – it is an increasingly important way for candidates to reach their most ardent supporters.

But talking about the issues on Twitter may not always be the most effective means of engaging supporters. A recent Trump tweet wishing retired golfer Jack Nicklaus happy birthday received more than four thousand “likes”, roughly twice as many as Clinton’s policy-related tweets on the same day.

Nokia boosts revenue with Samsung patent resolution

Cyber-law-legal-624x351

Finland’s Nokia on Monday settled its patent dispute with South Korea’s Samsung, saying the arbitration verdict would boost its patent sales by hundreds of millions of euros.

Nokia said the settlement would lift sales at its patent unit Nokia Technologies to around 1.02 billion euros ($1.1 billion) in 2015, include catch-up revenue from the past two years, from 578 million euros in 2014.

The annualized net sales run-rate for the patent unit is now about 800 million euros, Nokia added.
Nokia entered into a binding arbitration with Samsung in 2013 to settle additional compensations for Nokia’s phone patents for a five-year period starting from early 2014.

“The use of independent arbitration to resolve differences in patent cases is a recognized best practice, and we welcome the additional compensation payable to Nokia under the extended agreement,” said Ramzi Haidamus, the head of Nokia Technologies.

Nokia added it expects to receive at least 1.3 billion euros of cash during 2016-2018 related to its settled and ongoing arbitrations, including the Samsung award. Nokia currently has a similar dispute with LG Electronics.

Nokia, which once dominated the global mobile phones market, is now focused on telecom network equipment but still holds a large portfolio of phone patents. The company is due to close its 15.6 billion euro all-share takeover of French network gear rival Alcatel-Lucent this quarter.

Virtual reality headsets can trigger motion sickness, nausea

VirtualReality_NEW-624x351

Regular virtual reality (VR) headset-users who play motion-heavy videos suffer the most from motion sickness and nausea, researchers have found.

Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison demonstrated this by making the participants watch motion-heavy videos through the Oculus Rift — a 3D virtual reality headset worn like a pair of goggles.

The results, published in the journal Entertainment Computing with Green, pointed out that nearly two-thirds of the study subjects quit watching the videos early, overcome by nausea in the virtual environment for much the same reason discomfort catches up to people in real-world situations.

“The classic example is reading in a car,” says Shawn Green, a professor at University of Wisconsin-Madison, said, adding, “Lots of people can’t read in a car because if you have a newspaper in front of you, your visual system says you’re still.”

But you are not still. While the newspaper may not be moving, the car speeds up and slows down, turns corners and climbs hills. All this movement registers in the vestibular system, a series of organs in the ear that aid balance by telling us which way is up.

“In the car, those balance cues say you’re accelerating, and that’s a big mismatch with your eyes on the still newspaper. That mismatch makes you nauseous,” Green said.

The researchers also found that the people in their study who reported the most discomfort were also best at judging the direction of objects moving toward or away from them.

Project SkyBender: Google reportedly aims to beam 5G Internet from solar powered drones

google_drone

Google’s plan for beaming Internet from the skies is no secret. Now, a new report by The Guardian reveals that the search giant is testing solar-powered drones at Spaceport America. Google is renting a 15,000 square feet hangar space from Virgin Galactic.

Reportedly, as per some documents obtained under public records laws, the secretive project is called SkyBender and the company is said to have built several prototype transreceivers last summer. It is now said to be testing multiple drones. Google is also said to have installed its own dedicated flight control centre near Spaceflight Operations Center that is separate from the terminal.

So, Project SkyBender is reportedly using drones to experiment with millimetre-wave radio transmissions. It is a technology used to ‘underpin next generation 5G wireless internet access’.

These high frequency millimetre waves can theoretically transmit gigabits of data every second. It is said to be up to 40 times more than 4G LTE systems.

Google’s SkyBender is testing with a aircraft called Centaur and solar-powered drones made by Google Titan. Google had acquired Titan Aerospace back in 2014. SkyBender is part of a small Google Access team which also includes Project Loon. With permissions from FCC, Google can continue the testing until July.

Make in India: Mobile phone production in India now reaches 100 million units

Make-in-India_640-624x351

Mobile phone production in India has reached 100 million with leading companies setting up their manufacturing base in the country, Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said today.

“Today, I am happy to announce that in December, Rs 1.14 lakh crore investment has come in electronic manufacturing in India. We have attracted around 15 new mobile plants. Earlier in 2014, 68 million (mobile phones) were being manufactured and now 100 million are being manufactured,” Prasad said at Global Business Summit here.

Smartphone sales in India also reached 100 million by the end of December, 2015, he added.
“All the major companies in the world namely Panasonic, Mitsubishi, Nidec, Samsung, Bosch, Jabil, Flextronics, Continental are in India besides all the top Indian companies who are already here,” Prasad said.

Indian Cellular Association founder and President Pankaj Mohindroo said that in terms of value, mobile phone production in the country has increased by 95 per cent in the ongoing financial year as compared to the previous fiscal.

“Government has made sincere efforts to boost mobile phone production in the country. The new investment has created 30,000 new jobs in the country and state governments have shown keen interest in attracting these investments,” Mohindroo said.

Prasad said penetration of Internet is rising rapidly and increased by 100 million in a year to 400 million, including through mobile phones.

“With God’s blessing, I am confident that at this growth rate we will cross 500 million,” he added.

The minister reiterated his support for experimentation of new technologies in the country, including that of Project Loon by Google and White space spectrum use for broadband by Microsoft.

“Once the pilot becomes successful, then depending on security concerns, final call will be taken,” Prasad said.

He added that India is growing at a phenomenal pace and the government is looking to expand reach of technology through broadband network being laid out in rural India.

“We have scaled up optical fibre laying work by 500 times (compared to work done under previous government),” Prasad said.

The minister lauded the efforts of operators who have built huge telecom networks in the country but asked them to use it optimally for providing good service quality as well.
