The downgrade technique is that the work of developer tihmstar, with further credit aiming to winocm (kloader), xerub (odysseus), and iH8sn0w (consulting) among others.

Obviously this downgrade technique can have very restricted use-case situations, because it is strictly restricted to the said firmware/hardware combos. Nevertheless, it\'s a powerful (no SHSH blobs needed!) accomplishment, once you take into account how troublesome Apple makes it to downgrade firmware recently.

Google’s smart contact lens to arrive by 2019

Google-smart-contact-lens

Google’s smart contact lens that will measure glucose levels in diabetics by analysing their tears may be on the market before 2019.

In a recent patent application, Google showed off potential designs for how it could package a smart contact lens, suggesting the project could be further along than thought.

Last year, the company announced that it was working on a lens that would be able to measure a wearer’s glucose levels by analysing their tears.

The lens could potentially remove the need for diabetics to prick their fingers and draw blood to check their blood-sugar levels.

Google has previously said that general availability of the contact lens is most likely at least five years away.

However, for a project that is supposedly in the research phase, it seems an interesting step to apply for a patent on how to package the product for consumers, according to Quartz.
A representative for Google said that product releases can not be inferred from patent applications.

Samsung will stop blocking Windows updates ‘within a few days’

Samsung_AP

Samsung PC owners will soon receive automatic software updates from Microsoft again, after the company said it will end its practice of blocking automatic Windows Updates on its computers.

In conversation with Venture Beat, a Samsung spokesperson said, “We will be issuing a patch through the Samsung Software Update notification process to revert back to the recommended automatic Windows Update settings within a few days. Samsung remains committed to providing a trustworthy user experience and we encourage customers with product questions or concerns to contact us directly at 1-800-SAMSUNG.”

According to the report, Samsung’s SW Update software was disabling Windows Update on at least some computers. It points out that the update tool was grabbing and running a file named ‘Disable_Windowsupdate.exe,’ which was preventing Windows Update from automatically downloading and installing updates.

Microsoft uses the Windows Update tool to deliver new versions of Windows, updates to drivers along with security patches to the system that protect users from malicious attacks. A report by The Verge stated that Samsung implied that the reasoning for blocking the automatic install of the updates was to prioritize its own driver updates over Microsoft’s, which may not work with Samsung’s hardware.

Users who have not uninstalled the SW Update will have their Windows Update settings reverted to apply updates automatically when the company patches its service, just as Microsoft recommends.

Amazon will offer loans to sellers in India and 7 other countries

amazonpaypal

Amazon will launch its business loan program for small sellers later this year in eight more countries including China, where credit is becoming a key factor in competing for new vendors and grabbing market share.

Until now, the e-retailer has offered the service only in the United States and Japan. Amazon Lending, founded in 2012, now plans to offer short-term working capital loans in other countries where it operates a third-party, seller-run marketplace business, the head of Amazon Marketplace, Peter Faricy, told Reuters.

The countries are Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom. The service is on an invite-only basis and is not open to all sellers on Amazon’s platform.

Other large retailers including eBay Inc’s PayPal and Alibaba Group Holdings, which run third-party marketplaces, are also turning to credit to boost their vendor base. Some lending industry officials who help lenders assess credit risk say these retailers are taking on risky loans because they don’t know the shape of the credit market in which the sellers are operating.

Small businesses have high failure rates, especially in China and India, added William Black, a former US banking regulator and professor of Economics and Law at the University of Missouri.
Amazon said it can safely offer loans based on internal data and because it takes loan payments out of the sales proceeds it pays sellers. PayPal spokesman Josh Criscoe said eBay merchants who use PayPal are eligible for the working capital loans and credit is offered to only those customers that have a strong PayPal sales history. PayPal has provided more than $500 million (roughly Rs. 3,200 crores) in capital since September 2013, with an average loan disbursement of $2 million (roughly Rs. 12.7 crores) per day.

A spokeswoman for Alibaba’s financial services arm Ant Financial, which offers these loans, said credit is offered to Taobao, Tmall merchants and other small business owners who meet certain conditions. The company also offers such loans to customers in some countries like the United States and Britain.

Since 2011, Ant Financial’s Ant Micro Loan programme has issued CNY 400 billion ($64.42 billion, roughly Rs. 4,08,000 crores) worth of loans, and the non-performing loan ratio is 1.5 percent, the spokeswoman added.

Amazon offers three- to six-month loans of $1,000 (roughly Rs. 64,000) to $600,000 (roughly Rs. 3.8 crores) to help merchants buy inventory. It makes money on interest and takes a cut of all sales on its marketplace, which now account for about 40 percent of total Amazon site sales.

Amazon said it has offered hundreds of millions of dollars in loans since 2012, with more than half of its sellers opting for a repeat loan. The company declined to provide specific figures and also did not say how much it plans to lend this year. Amazon’s Faricy said the company has become better at understanding the inflection points in a small or medium business where capital can make a difference.

“We know a lot about our sellers’ business and invite only those who we think are in the best position to take capital and grow,” he said. Faricy said Amazon uses internal algorithms to choose sellers based on the frequency with which they run out of stock, the popularity of their products and their inventory cycles.

In China, where Alibaba lends to small businesses, offering such loans is more of a business requirement, analysts said. “Amazon has very little share in China and they haven’t been able to break out of that, so this is a very important necessary step for them to be able to grow,” said Gil Luria, analyst with Wedbush Securities in Los Angeles.

In other countries including India, where there is a scramble to expand the online shopping market, small business loans could offer a distinct competitive advantage, Luria said.

Mitigating risk

Online lending accounts for about 3 percent of the roughly $1 trillion (roughly Rs.63,944,32 crores) of outstanding personal and small business loans in the United States.

The default rate for small businesses with credit under a $1 million (roughly Rs. 6.3 crores) stood at 1 percent in 2014 but is seen rising to 1.6 percent in 2015, as new lenders with varying ability to assess risk increase lending, according to small business credit ratings provider PayNet.

Retailers like Amazon do not have data from sellers about some markets in which they operate, and relying on internal seller company data is not enough, said William Phelan, president of PayNet. Amazon said it has the information it requires to make “great loan decisions” because of close relationships with sellers and that it mitigates risk by taking loan payments from proceeds due to sellers for their sales.

Sellers interviewed by Reuters and writing on Amazon forums cited interest rates on Amazon loans ranging from 6 percent to 14 percent, in line with loans from banks and business credit cards.
Stephan Aarstol, chief executive of Tower Paddle Boards, an Amazon seller, said he has taken four loans from the company starting in March 2014 because of the speed and simplicity of the process. It took him five days to get his first loan.

“The problem for a small business owner is not the interest rate, it’s the availability of credit … I can’t grow fast enough,” he said.

Sony ‘seriously’ looking at setting up manufacturing plant in India

sony

Japanese electronics major Sony is “seriously” looking at participating in the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative and is considering setting up a manufacturing plant in the country.

“Of course, thanks to Modi’s strong initiatives, somehow we have to cope with the country’s direction and strategy. We are in talks as to how we can support country’s direction. At this point of time, we do not have any specific comment. We are seriously studying as how can we reply to PM’s requirements,” Sony India Managing Director Kenichiro Hibi said when asked if the company is planning to set up a manufacturing plant in the country.

However, he declined to share any information on time frame and investment in the new unit. When asked whether it can happen in next two years, he said: “Definitely yes, we would have to make something in such a time span.”

At this moment, “we do not have any specific comment on it. But yes it is and we are thinking it very seriously,” he told PTI.

Sony had closed its manufacturing facility in 2004 and now imports its products from China, Malaysia, Thailand, and Japan. Besides, Sony is also aiming a 20 percent growth in sales in the current fiscal and expects a good contribution to come from non-metro places.

“Up to last fiscal (FY 2014-15), we were having 20 percent overall growth. This fiscal it is also expected to be the same although it is a challenge,” he said.

Sony India had a turnover of Rs. 10,000 crores in 2014-15 and around 75 percent of its revenue came from Bravia range of TVs and Xperia range of mobile handsets. Sony India is the fourth highest contributor in the global sales of Sony Corporation.

Indians spend 47 percent of time on apps like WhatsApp, Skype: Ericsson

whatsapp_cover-624x346

Smartphone users in India spend 47 per cent of their time on communication applications such as WhatsApp, WeChat, Hike and Skype which are key driver of mobile broadband usage, says a report.
“Communication continues to be the dominant activity on smartphones. Communication apps are ‘always on’ and are a key driver of mobile broadband usage,” the report by Swedish telecom equipment maker Ericsson said.

“As per our report, Indians spend 47 per cent of time using communications apps such as voice, instant messaging, voice over internet protocol (example Skype), emails and social networking on smartphones,” Ericsson said.

The report said communication apps have a higher dependency on mobile broadband usage, due to their ‘always on’ status.

The report analysed app usage behaviour using on-device measurements across several markets, including India, with a particular focus on how messaging and social media apps influence the way people communicate.

The research sample represents Android smartphone users in India, Japan, South Korea, the UK, and the US. In India, 7,500 Android users were surveyed.

The report said across the US, the UK and India, more than 30 per cent of the time spent on smartphones is spent on communicating apps.

“We found that 40-50 per cent of data consumption for communication apps uses mobile broadband, whereas the corresponding figure for video is just 20 per cent,” Ericsson ConsumerLab Senior Advisor Swetleena Swain said.

Chinese hackers now turning cyber gatekeepers: Report

Russia-hack

China, long accused by the United States of rampant cyber aggression, may be synonymous with hacking exploits these days, but that doesn’t mean every Chinese hacker is out to pilfer and destroy. As Chinese companies grapple with a sharp increase in the number of cyberattacks, many hackers are finding it increasingly lucrative to go above board and join the country’s nascent cybersecurity industry.

Zhang Tianqi, a 23-year old Beijinger, cut his chops in high school trying to infiltrate foreign websites, skirting domestic law by probing for vulnerabilities on overseas gaming networks. Now, after a stint working at internet bluechip Alibaba Group Holding Ltd, he is the chief technology officer of a Shanghai-based cybersecurity firm which owns Vulbox.com, a site offering rewards for vulnerability discoveries, and internet security media site FreeBuf.com.

“I’d been messing around in the field in my early years, but luckily it just so happens now that there’s this trend of China taking information security very seriously,” Zhang said on June 18, from his office in a high-tech development in eastern Shanghai.
China’s President Xi Jinping has made cybersecurity a national priority as the country starts to feel the impact of rapid economic growth occurring without a corresponding development in data protection.

In May, China’s National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team, a non-profit agency, said it had recorded 9,068 instances of data leaks in 2014, three times as many as in 2013, reflecting the “grim challenges” of Chinese cybersecurity, according to the official Xinhua news agency.

To try and tackle this, dozens of cybersecurity companies are now cropping up across China according to industry observers, populated by young techies with bona fide security skills and work experience at firms like Alibaba, Tencent Holdings Ltd and Baidu Inc.

China is hoping that eventually domestic cybersecurity groups will provide most of its companies with defences against hacking, rather than them relying on foreign firms like Symantec, Kaspersky and EMC Corp’s RSA.

The gradual professionalism of China’s bedroom hackers traces the country’s rise as an economic and technological force, and its sometimes conflicted position in the escalating global data security arms race.

The U.S. government has attributed sophisticated attacks – including the large-scale data theft this month from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) – to increasingly advanced state-affiliated teams from China.

But former hackers say the majority of their peers are joining a burgeoning industry to help China firms fend off the numerous attacks they face themselves.

China has denied any connection with the OPM attack and little is known about the identities of those involved in it.

The Cyberspace Administration of China told Reuters in a June 19 fax that it opposes “any form of network attack” and does “not allow any groups or individuals to engage in network-attacking activities” within its borders.

CRACKDOWN

The cybersecurity industry’s growth was partly spurred by a government crackdown on China’s hacking community five years ago – around the same time Beijing passed a series of laws banning hacking and spamming tools and requiring telecom operators to help suppress attacks.

Government sweeps largely silenced once-raucous online forums like kanxue.com, where hackers traded tips and boasted about their conquests. Many chose to shift from “black hat” activities to “white hat” ones, using their skills to find network vulnerabilities so that they can be fixed.

“Many people feel that now white hats have some space to do things, or make money, while hackers can’t do bad things anymore,” said one hacker who asked not to be identified because of his former work with the government.

Aside from companies like Alibaba, Tencent and Baidu beefing up their defences, China’s government has also been working to ramp up the data security of the country as a whole.
Agencies including the Cyberspace Administration of China have led educational efforts around promoting data security.

Still, many “white hats” say Chinese companies continue not to take the matter of information security seriously enough, neglecting to hire enough people in-house to protect themselves.
“I hope we can give people a wake-up call,” said the former government hacker. Even with the current progress, it’s likely to be a long and laborious effort, with China saying it is often the target of sophisticated attacks from overseas.

Last month, Chinese security company Qihoo 360 Technology Co Ltd issued a report saying it had discovered a series of cyber-intrusions against important Chinese targets that lasted for years. These include a government maritime agency, research institutions and shipping companies.

Zhang says that while the finger is often pointed at China for hacking attacks, the country is still playing catch up with the United States on both the cyber security, and cyber espionage fronts.
“When China’s measured up against the American giants, the level of their hacks, their data security, the scale and the harm they can do is all much greater.”

How wifi Nanoparticles can Talk To The Brain

Most of us know that our brain functions in a complex manner. The neurons within the brain communicate through electrical signals, and our brain has around one hundred billion neurons and every communicates with voluminous others. The data is traveled and transferred at the atomic level. we will read and maneuver the signals through implants and wiring within the brain, however solely to some extent.

A team of medical researchers at Sunshine State International University has found in a different way of mapping the brain signals additional accurately than ever. They injected twenty billion nanoparticles into the brains of mice, with the thought of creating a form of direct wireless association to neurons.

These area unit the ‘Magnetoelectric Nanoparticles’ ( MENs) that move on towards the neural networks within the brain. The nanoparticles possess special properties.

As per Sakhrat Khizroev,

When MENs area unit exposed to even a particularly low frequency field of force, they generate their own native field at identical frequency. In turn, the electrical field will directly couple to the electronic equipment of the neural network.

This technique of obtaining within and really seeing the processes happening within the brain would open new levels of brain-computer networking interface. The nanoparticles can be more wont to deliver medicine to specific components of the brain.

The researchers’ team showed that numerous antiviruses can be discharged within the body through this technology. They need showed that the particles will carry anti HIV medicine and antineoplastic paclitaxel.

Khizroev suggests that doing the method in reverse would create a new way to control the machines and interact with computers. The nanoparticles would produce magnetic fields in response to the brain’s own electrical signal. the pc would get our brain signals because of the input parameters and so will directly simulate the targeted regions of the brain reciprocally.

This technology but not however tested on humans, has created quite an stir among the individuals within the drugs field. Unveiling the ways that of the operating of human brain would result in unlocking several mysteries.

They manufacture electrical fields within the neighbourhood of the individual neurons, once triggered by the magnetic field externally. The MENs’ generated field communicates directly with the brain’s field.

Nokia Networks on Thursday showcased some of its new technologies in the mobile broadband segment at an event hosted by the company.

According to the Finnish brand, the technologies showcased are aimed at empowering operators, in their journey of evolution, to effectively manage and monetise the surging mobile broadband growth.

Some of the technologies include innovations in Telco Cloud (VoLTE/ VoWiFi), 5G, security solutions and predictive marketing.

The Telco Cloud or VoLTE/ VoWiFi will enable an operator to provide operator-controlled voice over Wi-Fi networks which is especially useful in providing indoor coverage when LTE/ 2G/ 3G is not in place.

Another technology showcased was the Nokia Mobile Guard, which has an analytics engine that “listens” and “analyses” the traffic for mobile broadband and searches for patterns that are consistent with malware behaviour.

With this, operators will be able to ensure an efficient, and clean network with round-the-clock monitoring and automated actions in the advent of fraud by providing protection for all subscribers, independent of device type and irrespective of whether antivirus is installed.

Arno Koch, head of business development, mobile broadband, Nokia Networks and Suresh Kalyanasundaram, senior specialist, technology and innovation research, Nokia Networks were present at the event.

Polaroid

Polaroid has launched a new wireless camera called Cube+, the successor to its Cube pocketable camera which features a built-in Wi-Fi. The device will be available starting August for $149.99 and the pink and glow-in-the-dark green versions of the original Polaroid Cube will be available for $99.99.

Apart from the built in Wi-Fi, the 1.34 x 1.34 inch Polaroid Cube+ connects with smartphones as well as tablets using the  Polaroid Cube+ app for iOS and Android. Users can control their Cube+ cameras and upload and share media with friends. The camera packs in an 8MP sensor which is a significant upgrade from the 6MP sensor seen previously on original Cube camera.

According to a report by Mashable, the Cube+ doesn’t appear to have any upgraded imaging optics. The report also pointed out that it still includes a 124-degree wide-angle lens that records up to 90 minutes of continuous video at 1080p full HD resolution. In other features, the Polaroid Cube+  is splash-resistant up to 6.5 feet, includes a microSD card slot which can be expanded up to 32GB.

According to an earlier report, Polaroid Cube was launched during CES last year at $99. There’s a 120-degree wide-angle lens that can capture HD video in 720p and 1080p resolution, and still images up to 5 megapixels. It’s also waterproof up to 2 meters and shockproof. There’s an opening at the back, which contains 2MB of internal storage and a micro SD slot to expand the storage up to 32 GB.

There’s only one button on the device. Single click to capture still photos and double click to start capturing a video. The dice is embedded with magnets so it can be mounted on most metal surfaces such as a handlebar of a cycle. You can also buy separate mounts that range from $10 to $40. There’s a Bike Mount for easy mounting onto handlebars, and a Waterproof Case with suction mount that extends the two-meter waterproofing to an incredible 10 meters below the surface. The suction mount can attach to any flat, smooth surface such as a surfboard.

Taylor Swift agrees to stream 1989 album on Apple Music

Taylor-Swift_ibnlive

Pop superstar Taylor Swift said Thursday she would stream her latest album only on Apple, capping an 180-degree about-turn after she threatened a boycott. The big loser in Swift’s reconciliation with Apple stands to be Spotify, the leader in the booming sector of streaming, which offers unlimited, on-demand music.

Swift on Sunday issued an open protest to Apple over compensation to artists on its upcoming streaming service, leading the tech giant to reverse course and step up payments.

In response, the 25-year-old singer, who had initially threatened a boycott, said Thursday that she would stream her blockbuster album “1989” on Apple Music. “This is simply the first time it’s felt right in my gut to stream my album. Thank you, Apple, for your change of heart,” Swift wrote on Twitter.

Swift last year pulled her entire catalog from Spotify, angry at the Swedish company’s free tier supported by advertising.

The starlet streams most of her work on rival platforms such as Google Play and rap mogul Jay-Z’s Tidal, but until now “1989” by far the best-selling US album of the past year was available only on physical copies or digital downloads.

In another sign that Apple is investing heavily in streaming, Pharrell Williams said that his new single would be released exclusively on the service when it goes live on Tuesday. Williams, best known for the viral hit “Happy,” released a video on social media to preview the song, entitled “Freedom.”

Swift insisted that she had not entered any special deal with Apple. “In case you’re wondering if this is some exclusive deal like you’ve seen Apple do with other artists, it’s not,” she tweeted.

Swift had initially lashed out at Apple for not planning to pay royalties to artists for streams during customers’ three-month trial periods. She said that other artists were afraid to speak out for fear of incurring the wrath of Apple, which enjoys major influence in the music world through iTunes.
A senior Apple executive within hours called Swift, who was in Amsterdam on a tour, and said the company would compensate for songs at all stages of streaming.

Homelane.com launches Google Cardboard-enabled VR headset to design your home

Kaleido
Google Cardboard-based Kaleido

We recently wrote about how virtual reality (VR) is a big thing, if not necessarily the next big thing. While we emphasised on the debate about virtual reality going beyond gaming and here’s roughly a year old startup that shows its potential in the home decor space.

HomeLane is trying to bring the change in buying trends in the home decor market its new Google Cardboard-powered VR headset – Kaleido. The device aims at providing an immersive VR experience, allowing them to view different looks and designs for their kitchens, bedrooms and living rooms in real time. It should be noted that the fixed furniture and home solutions market size is said to be $10 billion in the top 10 Indian cities, and growing at 20% CAGR.

Srikanth Iyer, co-founder and CEO at Homelane, demonstarted the new VR app along with Kaleido. He explained, “It’s a unique tool for users in home decor with assisted guidance using virtual reality options that they can look at for their interior including kitchen, wardrobe, living rooms, bedrooms. So, you haven’t spend the money but can visualise what the room will look like at an immersive level. It is an extremely immersive experience better than going to a showroom because in a showroom you will never see what you really want at the end of the day.”

Homelane has its presence in Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune and Kochi, and to expand in Mumbai and NCR soon. “We have seen some startling initial results (for VR and Kaleido) and plan to use it across the country,” Iyer adds.

We had the chance to experience Kaleido and the accompanying app. During the demo, we could view various furnishing options in real time. A three dimensional rendition of the kitchen that changed colour, finish, chimney size and so on. You don’t have to wait until you finally see the finished product. The new feature allow users to see how the finished product will look, before opting for it.

Interestingly, co-founder and CSMO Rama Harinath says the new innovation is aimed at the middle class segment. One can get in touch with Homelane and put forth their choices of colours, designs, flooring, cabinet tops and so on. Homelane will then set an appointment with the customer, and offer a demo based on their choice of finish product. It will allow customers to view different combinations of the kitchen in real-time before taking the call. The startup has also tied up with several interior designers and also an in-house team that will look after building the product.

Kaleido is said to be an important part of HomeLane.com’s ‘showroom in a box’ philosophy. The Google Cardboard powered immersive device along with other tools. HomeLane.com offers guaranteed installation in six weeks from order date, along with a 5-year warranty.

The company also plans on adding further improvements like augmented reality. It also plans to ensure that you do not go over budget. Similar to HomeLane, fashion retailers and automobile manufacturers also implement technologies such as virtual reality to give a feel of colour and texture.

After hearing of virtual and augmented reality efforts in the technology space, it’s quite refreshing to see a real world use case scenario of technology. What’s even more exciting is businesses in India are rapidly adapting immersive technologies for better user experience.

Facebook must turn over user data in sex video case, says Dutch court

facebookexperia

Facebook must turn over any information it possesses that could help a young woman find out who published a sex video of her without her consent, a Dutch court ruled on Thursday.

The Amsterdam District Court said in its ruling that if the U.S. company cannot comply because it has erased the relevant data — as it argues — it must allow an external expert access to its servers to verify that. Facebook had argued that the user who posted the video had done so from a fake account and said it had erased all information relating to the post from its servers, along with the video itself, in February.

“The offending account was ultimately deleted before we received any request for user data, so all information about it was removed from our servers in accordance with our terms and applicable law,” Facebook said in a statement emailed to Reuters.

“We deeply empathize with the victim’s experience and share her desire to keep this kind of nonconsensual imagery off of Facebook,” it said. The woman who sued Facebook has appeared on Dutch television identifying herself as Chantal, 21. She described the suffering and humiliation she has undergone since the video was posted.
The video, in which the woman is recognisable, was made by a former boyfriend when they were both minors. He denies any involvement in the posting of the video online.

Although it was removed from Facebook within an hour of being posted, the video was downloaded and then further circulated on the Internet.

“Facebook has a legal obligation to provide the information because the unknown person acted illegally and the information cannot be obtained elsewhere,” a court-issued summary of Thursday’s decision said.

“If Facebook continues to maintain that all data that could lead to a person are definitively deleted from its servers and no longer traceable, that should be confirmed by an independent researcher,” the ruling said.

Facebook, which is the world’s largest social media network, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
