After Google and Facebook offered to help citizens of Chennai affected heavily by rains, Skype has also joined the list. The company will make international calls to landlines and mobile phones in Tamil Nadu free of charge for the next couple of days.

The company stated in a blog post, “In light of the devastating floods in Chennai – and the subsequent impact to the local communications infrastructure – with immediate effect we are making all international calls to landlines and mobiles into Tamil Nadu free of charge for the next few days.”
However, Skype also added an update to the blog and stated, “We are aware that not all calls to mobile numbers are currently getting through and are actively investigating a solution to this issue.

We are taking feedback and updating the mobile prefixes which apply to Chennai/Tamil Nadu. We will update this post once we have increased coverage. Apologies for the inconvenience.” This may be due to the lack of infrastructure in the city as the rain and over flooding may have hampered telecom offices and towers in Chennai.

Last month, to help communicate with friends and family, Skype had made calls free for a few days after the Paris attacks. In another blog post, Skype wrote, “In light of the devastating events that have taken place in Paris, we want to help people stay in touch with friends, family and colleagues. So, with immediate effect we are making all domestic and international calls to landlines and mobiles in France free of charge for the next few days.”
